Project Overview:
The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S.
The Tallgrass CCGT project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early-stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery next year.
The candidate will act as the Surveyor Manager on the upcoming Tallgrass CCGT Project. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, Houston or Cheyenne, Wyoming, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long-term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming, TX. This position is contingent upon project award.
Job Summary:
The Survey Manager is responsible for managing, coordinating, and administering all surveying requirements on the project, reporting directly to the Site Manager.
They will provide surveying technical support to Field Engineering and Superintendents in a wide range of situations and configurations. The scope of work covers multi-disciplined field engineering responsibilities with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping.
They will supervise and/or direct activities relating to construction engineering, layout of foundation locations, equipment locations, structural steel placement, subcontracts, and engineering liaison with the design functional group. They will use design drawings, model and specifications to determine associated plant and equipment locations. They will work with field engineering to support field verification of materials as appropriate and needed. #LI-TH1
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead the oversight of all survey operations and overall quality and integrity of the surveying program, assuring that all survey work is performed with the highest regard for the safety of all involved.
- Leads the review of project design and engineering documents, model, and model data to ensure their completeness and readiness for safe layout and verification
- Oversees Survey calculations and Survey Reports for all project disciplines/scope
- Provide technical direction to the direct-hire survey team and/or sub-contracted survey crews, including verification of survey crews’ control points and work.
- Direct the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality, and environmental programs.
- Oversee the survey team’s implementation of the Survey Procedure (SWPP 3201).
- Establish and/or verify and maintain the project’s survey control network.
- Responsible for the accurate layout of construction work, recordation of field data according to job specifications and appropriate methods of performing survey activities.
- Oversee the development and management of survey data.
- Oversee the utilization of survey instruments in conjunction with Bechtel survey procedures
- Ensures measuring and test equipment (M&TE) Survey Equipment is in compliance with SWPP
- Ensures Projects weekly/monthly equipment collimation is in compliance with SWPP
- Oversee the administration of the survey work request program.
- Ensures Project Monitoring and Settlement program
- Supervise the preparation of survey CAD drawings, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations.
- Perform and/or check survey computations as required in the performance of duties.
- Perform and/or check survey control network least squares adjustment computations as required in the performance of duties.
- Ensures the project Survey "As-Built" model is up to date
- Provide project completion documentation including "As-Built" records.
- Responsible for the creation and implementation of the project survey plan.
- Responsible for the creation and implementation of the survey training program.
- Direct the implementation of project’s Laser Scanning program.
- Direct the implementation of project’s Metrology program.
- Provide Construction Survey support to both Field Engineering and Field Supervision
- Provides direction and support to the Area Lead Surveyors and Office Surveyors.
- Ensures availability of Survey crews required to execute construction activities
- Ensures compliance with contract documents.
- Reviews and/or leads, as assigned, the preparation of Survey estimates, cost engineering studies, schedules, and budgets
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Engineering/Technical degree and 9 years’ experience in heavy construction/industrial surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments, software, and technology. In-lieu of a degree, at least 5 years’ supervisorial experience or 15 years’ experience, with at least 5 years’ supervisorial experience.
- Must have the right to live and work in the USA without sponsorship
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education
- Experience with 3D Laser Scanning hardware and software is a must.
- Must have experience managing teams working on multiple work fronts; experience working under time constraints, and must be adaptable to changing conditions.
- Experience with UAV/Drones.
- Experience working with, supervising, and administering subcontractors workforce.
- Experience managing technical services subcontracts is desirable.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program.
- Must have a strong drive toward Safety, both on and off the job, and a commitment to seeing everyone go home each day as well and healthy as they came to work that day.
- Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards.
- Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework.
- Knowledge of heavy industrial construction survey principles.
- Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to heavy industrial construction surveying field & office activities.
- Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures.
- Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with survey team members, other departments and contractors, and survey functional management.
- Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Excellent problem-solving ability.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations; and drafting of as staked/as-built data.
- Awareness of government compliance standards and environmental laws.
- Must be physically capable to participate in project walkdowns, which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in or maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting up to 40lbs without assistance.
- This project may have multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime, weekends and/or night shift when a business need arises.
- Prior Bechtel Survey Mega-Project experience.
- Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to Metrology field & office activities.
