Project Overview:

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fuelling unprecedented demand for data centres that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S. Our team is helping the customer progress early-stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery in 2026.

The candidate will act as the Startup Electrical Lead on the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Project in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston-VA to support planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field, when the candidate will locate on a long-term assignment to the project in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.

Job Summary:

The Startup Electrical Lead assists the Commissioning Manager in managing and supervising the electrical CSU activities at the project. The individual is responsible for planning and executing the startup, commissioning, and initial operation of the electrical systems and equipment at the project. The lead will be responsible for managing electrical commissioning, including assigning systems and responsibilities to the electrical startup engineers under his/her direction.  This will require coordinating with mechanical, instrumentation and control systems disciplines and other functional departments to complete all required testing from component level through integrated operation with the rest of the facility. #LI-VB1

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists in preparation of project estimates.
  • Coordinates, as directed, with project management, the startup related engineering, construction, and client activities as an office assignment or during startup, operations, maintenance or testing at the jobsite.
  • Directs the preparation of portions of or assists in the preparation of operations manuals.
  • Sets up progress reporting framework for scope area, and reviews on an ongoing basis with team, taking proactive course corrections as necessary.
  • Develops and evaluates plans and criteria within the discipline or specialty for a variety of project activities. 
  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned engineers, estimates staffing needs, schedules, and assigns work to meet completion dates.   
  • Provides technical advice and counsel on specific assignments by providing the resolution of technical questions arising in the area of specialty. 
  • Preparation of system testing and turnover documentation.
  • Provides assistance to the training group on the project in the development of training program material intended for classroom and OJT training of client personnel.
  • Applies knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, and design criteria pertinent to utility scale electrical systems such as ANSI/IEEE C50, IEEE C57, IEEE 115, NETA Guidelines, NFPA 70, to development of test plans and procedures.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13  years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Relevant experience in delivering large-scale combined cycle power projects.
  • Broad working knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and facilities’ operations criteria pertinent to the Electrical related activities supervised.
  • Knowledge and experience with commissioning behind the meter power generation is preferred. Integration of power facilities in a data centre environment is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of administrative practices including cost and scheduling. 
  • Ability to work effectively in leading in a team environment, motivating and supporting others.
  • Demonstrated expert understanding of CSU core processes and procedures.
  • Technical and practical comprehension of engineering, procurement, and construction functions and general business techniques.
  • Excellent skill in oral and written communication with demonstrated skill to present CSU information to management and client.
  • Proficient in meter and relay testing.
  • Knowledgeable in various transformer testing protocols.
  • Experience with high voltage (transmission) Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS).
  • Skilled in leading and directing craft crews.
