Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.

The M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will plan, develop, and structural engineering design work, produce drawings and documentation, and prepare design estimates for a project. There will be levels of flexibility required at times working on mechanical and electrical discipline design work, including the development of general drawings for those disciplines.

You will coordinate with clients, facilitate technical discussions, and review key structural drawings, calculations, and bid summaries, solving complex technical issues and ensuring structural designs comply with all regulations and standards.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops designs for engineering systems including, general arrangements, details and layouts with minimum supervision from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed
  • Assists in constructing detailed scale models
  • Ensures compliance with approved Bechtel design standards in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design
  • Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by assigned designers/drafters for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality and satisfactory completion
  • Participates in constructability reviews
  • Coordinates the reviews for the accuracy of bulk material quantity take-offs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline
  • Works with designers in other disciplines to coordinate overall design and technical requirements
  • Assists in the development of work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline
  • Provides on-the-job training for personnel within the discipline design team
  • Generates 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models with minimal guidance from others
  • Ensures designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • University Degree with 1-2 years of experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria, guides & procedures and codes relevant to the engineering discipline.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidiscipline team for EPC/EPCM projects.
  • Proficient in discipline with the ability to resolve a wide range of issues.
  • Experienced in the use of Microstation / AutoCAD software packages as well as 3D modelling skills are preferred. 
  • Experienced in steel detailing using Tekla software.
  • Supplemental experience in SmartPlant 3D, will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of engineering design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, reading of drawings, and reproduction methods used by the discipline.
