Project Overview:

We’re hiring a Senior Compliance / Tax Accountant (Australia) reporting to the Australian Country Controller within the Bechtel Business Services (BBS) Financial Services Team based in Brisbane. This position is eligible for hybrid telework, with an in-office schedule based on team deliverables.

 

The BBS Financial Services team provides services and support to Bechtel’s Global Business Units, Project Teams, and Offices around the world with regards to key accounting functions including Account Reconciliation, Benefits Accounting, General Ledger, and local Operations Reporting. The team performs vital functions such as responding to PwC audits, preparing financial statements, and supporting vital local compliance for the Australian/New Zealand entities. The General Accounting team also is responsible for statutory accounting and reporting of legal entities and branches in Australia and New Zealand and provides accounting and tax compliance services and support to local country management and projects.

Job Summary:

Senior Compliance / Tax Accountant (Australia) reporting to the Australian Country Controller within the BBS Financial Services Team based in Brisbane. This position includes being directly responsible for the preparation of the Australian and New Zealand tax returns and other tax compliance and reporting activities (which includes income tax and transfer pricing compliance, fringe benefits tax and GST). This role also extends to performing calculations and tax disclosures required to be reported in the annual financial accounts to prepared in accordance with applicable Australian accounting standards and liaising with the International Tax, Corporate Controller and BBS financial service centres to identify and resolve tax/accounting issues.

 

As part of the role the Company regularly receives government reporting requests from various statutory bodies which must be completed and submitted within strict timeframes. The candidate must have the ability to maintain a sense of urgency focusing on critical issues, be detail oriented and demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and records journal entries to assist with annual direct and indirect tax reporting (including income tax true-ups, subvention payments and managing tax ledger accounts),
  • Prepares quarterly tax accrual calculations for management reporting and annual tax disclosures for annual financial statements, and work papers to support audits of various legal entities’ annual financial statements,
  • Prepares monthly Business Activity Statements and prepares monthly PAYG income tax instalments calculations and statements,
  • Manages and prepares the supplementary annual GST return for the Australian MEC Group, in particular the reconciliation between the audited financial statements for the Australian Bechtel companies and monthly Business Activity Statements  
  • Prepares Australian and New Zealand income tax returns and attending to related compliance reporting activities (including preparation of hybrid mismatch calculations and assisting with preparation of the Australian Local File for reporting international related party dealings and other matters (including the revised Short Form, Part A and Part B),
  • Managing Fringe Benefits annual tax return preparation and related payroll reporting for Australian/New Zealand reporting entities,  
  • Assists with the preparation of responses to any Australian Taxation Office or New Zealand Inland Revenue Department queries, reviews or audits,
  • Is responsible for preparation and review of information to support multiple government reporting requests received during the year (i.e. including the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Payment Times Reporting Regulator, etc).
  • Reviews various documents, summaries, and support to verify accuracy and conformance with specific functional, corporate, contract, or professional accounting requirements,
  • Assists with external audit questions and/or other questions posed by internal teams related to tax compliance and accounting issues,  
  • Consults routinely with internal service teams (including International Tax, Controller and BBS Global Shared Teams) and external advisors regarding work deliverables, 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting with at least 6-9 years relevant industry experience.
  • CA / CPA qualified.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to simultaneously manage numerous tasks of varying complexity are critical to this role; must be able to effectively work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with Oracle general ledger and familiarity with CFAR is considered advantageous.

Industry experience

  • Prior experience with large, multinational corporate consolidations and dealing with Australian/New Zealand corporate compliance (specifically financial and tax reporting obligations) would be considered advantageous.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Sound understanding and familiarity with annual financial disclosures for Australian / New Zealand Annual Financial Statements (with respect to specifically Australian Accounting Standard AASB 112).
  • Knowledge of Australian/New Zealand taxation systems and familiar with relevant tax compliance requirements.
  • Ability to apply good business judgment in the execution of assigned tasks and understand when to seek direction/guidance prior to managing a work assignment.
  • Ability to analyse financial data, provide early recognition of potential problems and provide effective and innovative thought processes in handling financials issues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills at the business and technical level.
  • Strong collaborator with demonstrated leadership ability who is client-driven and has ability to communicate cross functionally.
  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to work across cultures.
  • Is initiative-taking, works with minimal supervision, and is able to work to deadlines.
