Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.

The M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

 

Job Summary:

As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will support several projects across the mining and metals business, providing technical leadership and guidance on electrical power systems for the greater Electrical Engineering team. You will be responsible to produce deliverables according to best practise, departmental procedures, codes and standards, design guides, appropriate software and administrative practices.

The role will require knowledge large mining and metals operations in industries such as Bauxite, Iron, Copper or battery metals, and / or other heavy industry such as the oil and gas business. Experience with High Voltage reticulation and power systems analysis is essential, with experience in large rotating electrical machines being well regarded.

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Produce and/or supervise electrical calculations, power system studies, protection reports and arc flash analysis per Bechtel and client requirements, utilizing industry standard modelling programs (ETAP, DIgSILENT, PSCAD etc.)
  • Lead the formulation of engineering concepts and design throughout all project phases and present these to project management and the client.
  • Optimize system design to meet production targets such as maximum capacity, operating schedule, availability, and utilization, whilst minimising project CAPEX and OPEX requirements.
  • Provide engineering input to the specification, tender, evaluation and award of complex electrical material and service requisitions.
  • Conduct or lead special or unique studies requiring unconventional or novel approaches or research techniques, using all available guides and precedents and expands and develops where these contain critical gaps.
  • Serve as a consultant to projects providing advice on assignments having unique features.
  • Train and assist the development of other engineers withing the electrical discipline

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, or a professional license in an appropriate discipline from a recognized licensing board. 


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in the execution of Basic/Conceptual Engineering, FEED, and execution of EPCM and EPC mining and minerals projects.
  • Extensive experience in all or most of the following areas:
    • High Voltage system specification and design
    • Low Voltage system specification and design
    • Large rotating synchronous machines
    • Industrial power systems study and analysis
    • Start-up, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities or process plants is desirable.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, calculations, applications, construction methods and materials
  • Good working knowledge of industry and regulatory standards such as MSHA, OSHA, ISO, DIN, AS/NZS, AS, IEC, ANSI etc.
  • Has the capability to develop procedures and design criteria/guides and demonstrated knowledge of computer aided engineering (CAE) tools to perform calculations.
