Job Summary:

As Instrument Designer, you will plan, develop, and review control systems design work, produce drawings and documentation, and prepare design estimates for a project. You will coordinate with clients, facilitate technical discussions, and review and approve drawings, calculations, and bid summaries. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure control systems designs comply with all regulations and standards. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepares 2-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) plant layouts and study drawings from which detailed design 3-D CAD models and/or construction drawings are completed
  • Assist with preparation designs for Control System (DCS/PLC) engineering systems such as telecommunications networks, system architecture, loop diagrams, 2D layouts.
  • Review with engineers Control Systems designs compliance with all applicable installation codes, project desing criteria, regulations, and standards.
  • Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by others in the group and by material suppliers, as assigned.
  • Prepares bulk material quantity takeoffs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline.
  • Works with designers in other disciplines in the overall assignment to coordinate designs.
  • Assists with the elaboration of Control Systems and Instrumentation material requisitions and bid evaluations​. 
  • Answers questions from client or construction group on design for assigned responsibility.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of design office experience, plus one of the following:
    • 4 years of related job experience (can be inclusive of the design office experience),
    • A related trade qualification, or
    • Achieved, or studying:  The equivalent of an Associate Diploma in Engineering (in a related field).

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience using industry and regulatory standards, design criteria, guides & procedures and codes relevant to control and instrumentation discipline.
  • Experience in reading, interpreting, and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups, such as P&IDs, Electrical Layouts, etc.
  • Experience in engineering design tools MicroStation V8i Connect, Navisworks.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience using Engineering Design Systems like SmartPlant instrumentation.
