Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.

Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will collaborate to plan, develop, coordinate, and review project civil/structural design work.

You will produce 3D models, drawings, facilitate discussions, communicate complex technical issues, and prepare civil/structural design quantity estimates and work plans.

Your recommendations will ensure designs and work plans are in accordance with project scope, schedule, budget, regulations, and standards. 

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project.  Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews design work within a small-size civil/structural design work group on projects of medium size
  • Produces models, drawings and documentation in accordance with established design standards and scope requirements including design of earthwork, drainage, road design and concrete structures. ​ 
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of civil/structural engineers, scientists, specialists, designers and drafters​ 
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management​ 
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of civil/structural design estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly​ 
  • Follows Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel design guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices​ 
  • Coordinates with inter-discipline representatives (engineers, designers) to align and manage interfaces and overall design coordination. ​ 
  • Reviews key civil/structural engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries​ 
  • Mentors civil/structural designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development​ 
  • Ensures civil/structural systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 5 – 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices.
  • Extensive experience undertaking civil design and drafting using MicroStation and OpenRoads software.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in design and drafting and demonstrated skill in a lead role or recognized courses in the directing of personnel.
  • Sound knowledge of design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, graphic arts, reading of drawings, and reproduction methods used by the discipline.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups.
  • Experience in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups.
