Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.

 

Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

 

Bechtel are seeking personnel to join multiple existing and upcoming projects comprising copper/gold concentrators with associated ROM feed, ore handling, processing plant, tailings management facilities, and supporting infrastructure including water supply, power supply, maintenance facilities, offices, temporary and construction accommodation villages.   

Job Summary:

In this role, you will plan, develop, design, coordinate, and review architectural work on large projects with unique requirements. You will prepare discipline estimates and work plans, review and approve design documents, interpret regulations, and assist with performance reporting. Your recommendations for resolving complex issues will help ensure client satisfaction with a project’s architectural aspects. 

You will be responsible for coordination of the production of technical drawings, calculations, specifications and material take-offs for a project’s design, procurement and constructability aspects. You will additionally be responsible for supporting and reviewing engineering developed by third party engineering service providers in contribution to the overall project scope.

As the project architect you will facilitate technical discussions and design reviews, review vendor information, project and client design specifications and collaborating discipline design inputs. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure designs comply with all applicable regulations and standards.

This role will be responsible for the architectural design of surface infrastructure inclusive of all occupied and unoccupied non-process buildings including temporary accommodation and construction buildings, permanent warehousing, security and administration

Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s construction and operations personnel are efficiently accommodated.

 

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership".

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the architectural work for a small size project or assignment in support of a global business unit​ or staff group to include the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications​. 
  • Develops and interprets design criteria and specifications for complex architectural infrastructure.  Analyses problems with conflicting design requirements, sketches ideas and possible solutions.
  • Analyses and reports on the suitability of unconventional materials, techniques and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs for proposals, forecasts, and change orders​. 
  • Prepares letters to vendors and clients.
  • Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendations​. 
  • Plans, coordinates, or prepares equipment, work, and material specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations.
  • Coordinates architectural efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction, and other functional groups.
  • Prepares procurement and subcontract requisition documents and performs associated technical bid evaluations with award recommendations.
  • When delegated, provides guidance to other architectural personnel for specific tasks or project-subgroups​.  

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13  years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience​

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Australian building practices, standards, and codes.
  • Understanding of architectural building design for functionality, especially in industrial projects, and willingness to adapt to heavy mining industry contexts.
  • Strong adaptability and flexibility for a diverse range of projects and tasks in heavy mining resource projects, many in remote locations.
  • Skill in 2D and 3D CAD platforms and willingness to learn MicroStation and ProjectWise CAD management as used extensively by Bechtel.
  • Skill in Microsoft applications especially excel and word, also in Aconex document management system.
  • Ability to provide practical, economical, and functional solutions to buildings and facilities design, specification, and detailing, with ability to work with procurement and estimating in producing scopes of work for pricing and material quantifications.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team involving other engineering disciplines, with an emphasis on civil and structural interfaces.
