Project Summary

We are currently recruiting for an apprentice, with an initial assignment supporting HS2.   As a Delivery Partner, Bechtel provides expert engineering, environmental, engagement and project management support for the Phase 2b of HS2. We focus on the delivery of Hybrid Bill through the parliamentary process and advice to HS2's sponsor, the Department for Transport, to assist her Majesty's Government in making and implementing investment decisions.

HS2 is a hugely important project for the country as it will generate economic opportunities for those communities and businesses between Birmingham, Manchester, East Midlands and beyond. HS2 will play an increasingly important part in the post Covid-19 pandemic recovery and this team is a key part of the engine to make this happen.

This role has an anticipated start date of  April/May 2022 and permits block release to college / university. The role will be based in the Snow Hill, Birmingham office.

 

Rail Systems Engineer

Overview

Our Apprenticeship Programme will allow you to grow and develop as part of our ‘Early Career Hire’ Talent pipeline within our Engineering team, through our Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering. This will provide you with the experience, training and support needed to become an Engineer.

In a Rail Systems Engineers daily work, they deliver cost-effective design solutions that comply with the HS2 project and statutory requirements, supporting the Senior Area Engineer. They will review and assess technical submissions from Civil Design and Environmental Services Consultant (CDES) determining compliance with standards and requirements. This role will be predominantly office based.

Some of the roles and responsibilities will include:

·       Supporting the team to deliver safe and affordable design solutions that meet requirements.

·       Support from the Civil Design and Environmental Services Consultant (CDES) preparing the Rail Systems scope, drawing on expertise from within HS2 informing and supporting the minimum delivering design work that complies with requirements.

·       Identify and assess design risks within the project.

·       Ensure technical submissions comply with the accepted format and design requirements.

·       Provide technical engineering input, designs, documentation, and responses supporting the hybrid bill through parliament including additional provisions, freedom of information requests, and technical requests.

·       Attend public consultation and planning forums, working with local communities identifying priorities.

·       Support Senior Area Engineer in liaising with external stakeholders fully capturing their input and balance that with the overall HS2 business and technical requirements.

·       Explore opportunities for developing local community benefits and solutions under the direction of the Area Manager.

·       You will be working towards a Level 6 Rail Systems Engineering Apprenticeship Degree

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

·       Become a qualified Engineer.

·       Extend your qualifications by taking on further postgraduate study.

·       Join our Chartership Programme to achieve your Chartered status with Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Entry requirements

·       Must have three A-Levels at Grades A*-C including Mathematics and Physical Science or their equivalent or;

·       Level 3 in Engineering.
