An opportunity exists within the Bechtel project team to work closely with our customer on the Jadar Project.  Jadar will be the one of the largest greenfield projects ever built in Serbia, and the first delivered by M&M in the country. It will produce approximately 10 percent of the world’s lithium with 56,000 tpa of lithium carbonate, as well as boric acid (286,000 tpa) and sodium sulphate (252,000 tpa).

The Jadar Project consists of the world’s largest deposit (136 Mt) of the newly discovered mineral Jadarite (pronounced “yarda-rite”). The complex project is located near Loznica, approximately 140 km from Serbia’s capital Belgrade. Jadar includes an underground mine accessed by two vertical shafts, a processing plant, an industrial waste facility and associated infrastructure. 

M&M currently has approximately 30 employees in our customer’s office in Brisbane, with two additional colleagues in Rio Tinto’s Belgrade office. As the project moves into the next phase, the team’s roles will begin transitioning to Belgrade, Serbia. Project execution is expected to begin in 2021. 




Coordinates the design of the underground mine during the FS, FEED and Detailed Design phases of the project.  Liaises with the Client in regards to technology transfer, operation readiness and engineering governance requirements.  Liases with the Project Controls, Procurement, Contracts, Construction and Start-up functions to ensure engineering is executed in support of Project Delivery.  Liases with discipline engineering to ensure that procurement and contract related items are carried out in accordance with the project execution plan.  Coordinates all technical correspondence related to the mineral process plant.  Monitors schedule and cost performance of designers.  Assists contract administration with the administration of external engineering contractors.


On Jadar the System Engineer – UG Mine is responsible for the following:

  • Production of agreed Facilities Scope Documentation in accordance with the project schedule.
  • Planning and co-ordinating Hazard Studies and Design Reviews (Feasibility, 30%, 60% & 90% model and constructability reviews) for their nominated facilities and closing out actions in a timely fashion.
  • Identify and manage system performance risks using appropriate risk management processes and tools.
  • Identify, challenge and trend any changes that deviate from the project scope baseline and the facility scope documentation before proceeding with implementing the change.
  • Technical review of discipline engineering documentation as required.
  • Responsible engineer for the Mine Access Design contract.
  • Validation of Mine Access Design licensed engineers and maintenance of tracking register.
  • Liaison with permit team and technical control contractor.

  • Co-ordinates with engineering design and construction contractors, and participates in meetings/discussion, with respect to major items with suppliers, and jobsite conferences with project personnel.
  • As the point of Bechtel-Client contact on engineering aspects of assigned project or portions of a project, maintains regular client contact for progress of work, exchange of information, advice.



  1. Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of engineering work usually in one discipline in a project or staff group.  Performs work that involves conventional engineering/scientific practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  2. Plans, coordinates, and prepares equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.
  3. Coordinates engineering/scientific efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other divisional groups.
  4. When delegated, assumes a lead role over other staff or project subgroups for completing specific tasks.
  5. Assists in on-the-job training of assigned personnel and provides input for their performance evaluations.
  6. Prepares letters to vendors and clients.
  7. Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendations.
  8. Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals.
  9. Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design.
  10. Reviews project controls, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
  11. Reviews and checks work of subordinate technical staff.
  12. Prepares technical documents.



  1. Knowledge of general engineering technology and design methods.
  2. Knowledge of engineering delivery and review processes.
  3. Knowledge of project reporting, schedule and budget control tools.
  4. Oral and written communication skills.
  5. Office automation skills, primarily word processing and spreadsheet tools.
  6. Formal education, with a minimum of Bachelor degree, in Civil or Mining Engineering, or similar technology, from an accredited university.
  7. Work experience (minimum 8 years) in an engineering or technology specialist role is necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
  8. Knowledge or experience (minimum 5 years) in design and construction in shaft and/or underground facilities is preferred but not essential.
  9. Accreditation as a Mining Engineer with the Serbia Ministry of Mines and Energy is preferred but not essential.
