SUMMARY:

Responsible for assigned discipline activities for the coordination of the design that is being developed by the customer’s designer of record. Work includes design coordination for the structural and reinforcing steel design engineering activities as required for the Civil works of the Keeyask Generating Station project. The Keeyask Generating Station is a large scale hydro project located near Gillam in Northern Manitoba, and the design coordination work carried out under this position is for relevant structural/reinforcing work for the Civil Work Contract that include the Powerhouse and Spillway heavy concrete structures, dams, dykes and related works. This position will be based at the customer designer’s office in Winnipeg MB. Work may require field visits to the project site near Gillam, MB.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

A. Supervision Received

- Receives technical and operational guidance from assigned Senior Design Coordinator, Project Engineer, Field Engineering Manager and Lead Field Engineer.

B. Contacts

- Office contacts within the designer office in Winnipeg include the Senior Design Coordinator and other design coordinators in the team, and the customer design team working on the project.
- Jobsite contacts include field engineering, construction managers, field engineers, superintendents and the customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate related engineering activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

1. Responsible for assigned discipline activities that are aimed at the coordination of the design by the customer’s designer of record across the structural-reinforcing steel engineering activities.
2. Monitors design development and participates in early model reviews with the design team to ensure consistency and completeness of the discipline design information.
3. Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices combined with relevant construction experience to advise the designer of record on the constructability of the discipline design elements during the preparation of the engineering design.
4. Advises the customer designer on alternative processes, techniques, and materials as the assignment develops.
5. Assists the designer of record in making decisions concerning potential interdisciplinary construction conflicts within the project.
6. Represents the project in the design office working with the client as directed to resolve technical issues.
7. Monitors the origination and development of the discipline design drawings for the project and carries out design reviews at certain milestones to be agreed with the design team such as 30%, 60% & 90% reviews or similar.
8. Provides the designer with the discipline review comments within an agreed timeframe to ensure the timely development of the design.
9. Works with the design team to coordinate the issue dates for the discipline drawings and other design documents with the construction schedule to ensure that drawing production is consistent with construction and procurement need dates.
10. Reviews, checks and provides feedback on the designer schedule for issuing construction drawings to ensure a coordinated process with procurement and construction requirements.
11. Establishes Design-Field Engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Senior Design Coordinator, Field Engineering Management and Lead Field Engineer including agreement on the priorities and the engineering deliverables.
12. Maintains Design-Construction and Procurement working relationship and lines of communication with the field supervision to ensure agreement on the priorities and the engineering deliverables.
13. Provides feedback for the designer to ensure the consistency, completeness and accuracy of the Reinforcing schedules and quantities on the issued for construction drawings.
14. Coordinates and monitors the interfacing of the discipline designs with other embedded items such as, but not limited to, embedded gate guides, water stops, embedded piping, embedded grounding and conduits.
15. Participates in the implementation of the project construction procedures from the Standard Work Process Procedures and coordinates any deviations with the Field Engineering Management.
16. Coordinates with the construction area managers, superintendents and subcontractors to plan the construction activities requirements.
17. Recommends procedures to be implemented by superintendents to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design.
18. Works with customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate the different design aspects.
19. Implements controls over variables affecting job progress to ensure timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment required for the construction activities.

Basic Qualifications:

- Technical knowledge of all phases of structural and reinforcing steel design and relevant engineering activities.
- 10 Year Experience in structural and reinforcing steel design and coordination of large scale projects with mass concrete, heavy earthworks and steel structures.
- Knowledge and understanding of the applicable codes and standards and requirements of the Project Technical specifications that are related to the design of the described work in general.
- Thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to the structural and reinforcing steel design engineering activities, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
- Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) procedures as they relate to area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of project-specific environmental compliance requirements.
- Familiar with Business Ethics and Policies.
- Commitment to a “Zero Accidents” safety program.

This knowledge is normally acquired through:

- A recognized degree in Structural Engineering or related scientific discipline, AND
- Specialized courses in structural and reinforcing steel design of large scale projects with mass concrete and steel structures, AND
- Actual work experience in the design and coordination of structural design and reinforcing steel on large scale projects leading to a thorough understanding of the technical knowledge described above.
