Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

Position Overview:

This position is for a Field Geotechnical Engineer who will lead a team of geotechnical engineers/engineering geologists performing geotechnical activities for the Poland AP1000 Project at the project site in Lubiatowo, Poland. The successful candidate will report to Bechtel's Engineering Group Supervisor or their designee. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, demonstrable managerial experience, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and a commitment to quality. The successful candidate will be expected to provide full-time support of subsurface investigation activities at the site throughout the duration of the subsurface investigation. The length of assignment may be extended to cover future phases of subsurface investigations at the site.

 

Responsibilities:

The work will require observing field work including drilling, sampling and field testing activities, organizing and attending meetings with the field and office teams as needed, and coordinating with other geotechnical engineers/geologists and/or client engineers in a team environment. Responsibilities include the scope described below.

  • Become familiar with Bechtel’s specification(s), borehole location plan, bill of quantities and related subcontract documents
  • Participate in scheduled training activities
  • Manage the Bechtel field team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists
  • Hold regularly scheduled meetings with the team office to discuss work progress, technical issues, site conditions, staffing issues/needs, etc.
  • Provide technical direction to subcontractors performing the work, as required
  • Observe field geotechnical activities and enforce technical and quality requirements
  • Draft or review field instruction forms to resolve technical issues or provide clarification for work
  • Review field information provided by the subcontractor to ensure accuracy and compliance with Bechtel’s requirements
  • Coordinate work between multiple subcontractors and ensure consistency of information provided by different subcontractors
  • Resolve technical issues with subcontractors performing the work or elevate the issues to the team office on a timely basis
  • Assist with or review the preparation of Bechtel’s daily reports
  • Participate in site safety and plan of the day meetings, as scheduled
  • Be aware of and comply with safety requirements and reporting responsibilities
  • Assist with or review laboratory testing assignments of samples
  • Assist with any surveillance by the client or the Polish National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA), including presentation of samples and field work
  • Assist/mentor/manage other field geotechnical engineers and/or engineering geologists
  • Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Ability to communicate in English.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology from an accredited university or college and minimum 11 years of progressive related experience
  • Extensive experience related to overseeing and/or performing subsurface investigations (drilling, sampling, field and laboratory testing)
  • Previous demonstrable experience leading teams of field geotechnical engineers and/or engineering geologists
  • Knowledge of Polish geology
  • Polish certification as a Geologist
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (Polish, European and international) related to geotechnical investigations (field and laboratory)
  • Right to work in Poland without sponsorship
  • Experience with Microsoft office programs, and other common computer programs
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Ability to communicate in English.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (Polish, European and international) used in the nuclear industry
  • Demonstrable previous experience working on a large industrial EPC project
  • Preferred knowlege of geology around Lubiatowo
  • Experience with licensing, design, and construction of commercial nuclear power plants
  • Experience with nuclear quality programs
  • Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology from an accredited university.
  • Experience working with procedures meeting nuclear quality assurance programs and occupational health and safety
