Project Overview

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.

 

Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Reston, Virginia project office, with periodic business travel to Poland offices and sites as required.

 

Part-Time telework flexibility may be an option as the project progresses.

Position Summary

This position is for a Deputy Electrical Engineering Group Supervisor, who will assist in leading the Electrical team and helping to execute assignments concerned with specialized or unique engineering requirements for this project. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of the subject area, definition of scope, and may involve the development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. This role is responsible for the design delivery and supporting team management for the Bechtel work products and designs, as well as for coordinating the scope and integration of work with internal and external stakeholders.

 

The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.

 

The ideal candidate will have solid experience in electrical system and layout design and will be capable of developing design documents, including single lines, load lists, and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors. 

 

This role applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering. Makes decisions independently concerning problems within the discipline on the project. Represents the discipline on the project and with the client to resolve technical questions and as required to coordinate work. The successful candidate will support engineering design development for the Poland AP1000 project by preparing studies, drawings, calculations, specifications, and evaluations, in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. 

 

This position scope will be responsible for supporting the EGS by supervising engineers and helping to execute assignments concerned with specialized unique engineering requirements in a global business unit. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope, and may involve development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Development of formal calculations and drawings.
  • Development of subcontractor scopes of work for execution of construction work implementing design documents.
  • Review vendor information from subcontractors.
  • Execute to schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work product.
  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.
  • Manage discipline work process execution and assure technical adequacy in accordance with company procedures, contract, and industry codes and standards. 
  • Demonstrate ownership of assigned actions to self and group and shows initiative in problem solving.
  • Interface with PEJ and Transmission System Operator (TSO) for technical issue studies, resolutions, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate and interface with Westinghouse (Design Authority of AP1000 Design).
  • Accountable for error-free deliverables.
  • Approve technical reports and studies and design documentation, calculations using engineering software and specifications for electrical equipment.
  • Develop design configuration packages for configuration control and change management.
  • Perform power system analysis modeling and calculations.
  • Perform equipment and cable sizing calculations.
  • Develop equipment and material specifications.
  • Develop procurement documentation.
  • Establish and maintain work plans to ensure schedules are met and stakeholder requirements are satisfied. Create and track actions, estimate hours, and update schedules.
  • Devise new approaches to solving problems from a variety of detailed technical options and assess cost implications.
  • Contribute directly to the cost-effective design of electrical systems and equipment for the entire facility.
  • Ensure compliance with flow sheet and safety requirements by detail design.
  • Identify major technical uncertainties and present solution options for management decisions.
  • Serve as an advisor for the analysis and solution of engineering problems and interpret drawings, verbal instructions, and applicable codes relevant to project requirements and the ability to articulate explanations.
  • Coach, train and mentor electrical staff.

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, from an accredited university, with at least 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be authorized to live and work in the US without sponsorship.
  • This role requires a facility-specific clearance that requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer in USA (Electrical Engineering).
  • Experience with project controls including scheduling, estimating engineering efforts, planning, and work packaging.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards, as well as Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
  • Broad knowledge of the application of electrical engineering design principles.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, systems calculations, equipment sizing, and cable sizing.
  • Strong knowledge of power systems load modeling and analysis.
  • Prior experience working in a Nuclear, Quality, and Safety Environment.
  • Experience in nuclear plant design (power plant or DOE facility).
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
  • Hands-on Microsoft Office programs and other computer programs.
  • Extensive knowledge application of NEC Code and ANSI/IEEE Standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, schematics, and electrical equipment layouts.
  • Previous hands-on or extensive working knowledge with ETAP and other industry-wide electrical system design tools, such as CAD 2D, cable designing, and routing software.
  • Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with Bechtel standard programs.
  • Familiar with all Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs) and their application to projects.
  • Knowledge of design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPS).
  • Experience in construction interface and resolving field problems.
  • Experience with AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant Design. 
  • Experience planning and executing work in an EPPR environment.
  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university, with at least 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
  • Experience developing equipment configuration packages for procurement and maintenance.
  • Understanding of Mechanical and Process engineering discipline drawings and system calculations, as related to electrical design requirements.
  • Knowledge application of IEC or European codes and standards. #LI-SNH
