The Vit Plant team is responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the world’s largest and most technically sophisticated radioactive waste treatment plant (WTP) at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site in Washington State. This first-of-a-kind project will use vitrification to transform 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste into an immobile glass form. The waste is stored in 177 aging underground tanks accumulated between 1944 and 1989, when plutonium and other nuclear materials were produced for national defense. The plant will include three major nuclear process facilities and a laboratory: a Pretreatment Facility, a High-Level Waste Vitrification Facility, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification Facility and Analytical Laboratory, 20 support facilities and systems.
